No, the pandemic isn’t over, but your Instagram feed doesn’t have to suffer along with the rest of us!

Fun fact for you all, I love Instagram.

Though I technically had both MySpace and Facebook before the photo-sharing app was even in existence, Instagram was the first social media platform that I found a community on.

Many moons ago, that community was the One Direction fandom. Now, thanks to this blog, my community comprises disabled folx, allies, and those interested in learning more about my experience as a disabled young woman.

I was already fairly savvy with social media before starting The Rolling Explorer last year thanks to some amazing internships I’ve participated in. But, I’ve managed to learn even more over the last few months, including how to take a good, double-tap worthy photo.

If there’s one thing the algorithm loves, it’s to see you living your best life. While you may have had to cancel your summer vacation to Maui, chances are, you are still spending time with friends and family in some capacity.

While hugging and hand-holding may be frowned upon behavior at this point in the year, you can still document your time together. Use these 3 steps to take cute, socially distanced photos with your besties this fall!

1. Wear Masks

Staying safe during this pandemic needs to be your #1 priority. Wearing masks protects both you and others from a potentially dangerous and even fatal disease. I don’t care if it’s going to smudge your foundation or ruin your lipstick; put the mask on.

As most public spaces now require masks, clothing stores have matched their supply with our demand. You can now get masks in practically any fabric, color, or design that you desire.

Looking to diversify your new essential accessory? Check out some of these awesome options!

I just ordered this mask from Mighty Well, a company that aims to change the perception of patients from victims to fighters by improving the experience of being a patient.

Fun idea: Match your bestie by getting the same color/design!

2. Head Outside

For the most part, I think photos that are taken outside receive higher rates of engagement on average. Natural lighting and pretty sceneries definitely help with this, but these aren’t the only things.

Generally speaking, when we go outside, it is to do something fun and exciting. Those two words are the driving force behind Instagram. Can you take good, creative photos indoors? Of course. But, it’s 2020 and if we are hanging out in close proximity to others, the outdoors is probably our ideal meeting place.

So, go to a park or a hiking trail, and explore what you’re local area has to offer. You may just be surprised by the cool stuff you find!

3. Don’t Touch One Another

Time to experiment with different poses!

Look, I love side hugs, real hugs, and piggyback rides as much as the next person, but this is NOT THE TIME. As long as you’re wearing a mask, you can be close, but be sure to leave a little room for the safety bubble!

This past weekend, I went to a hiking trail with one of my best friends. We haven’t seen one another since my wedding back in February. Plus, since I am moving to London (hopefully) sometime soon, we aren’t sure when we will get the chance to hang out again.

Long story short: capturing the moment was a MUST!

As we walked along the path, we glanced around trying to find some convenient areas we could transform into our photoshoot location.

Before the pandemic, a typical picture you could expect from the two of us looked something like this:

As cute and friendly as this pose is, not only is it overdone, but it’s not a safe option for our current situation.

Here are some of my favorite poses from our time together!

Back to back is a classic that isn’t used nearly enough! Time to test it out now! Find a rock, a bench, some stairs, or even the sidewalk outside your house and get snapping!

Adding layers and levels to a photo adds depth and helps draw the eye to the image. If you’re looking for an easy way to spice up your feed, try something like this with a friend!
