Having a driving playlist has been essential for me in every stage of life. As a child, I would blast “Genie in a Bottle,” by Christina Aguilera and “It’s Gonna Be Me,” by NSYNC from my CD player in the backseat. When I was a bit older, I would only play songs from the community theater shows I participated in. Yes, of course, I drove my parents up the wall by singing along as loudly as I possibly could.

These days, if I am not listening to one of my favorite podcasts, I prefer to plug in my Spotify playlist, queue up some songs, and hit the road.

Before sharing my previous blog post about learning to drive as an amputee, I took to Instagram and asked what questions my followers had regarding my driving situation. I was overwhelmed by the influx of good quality questions I received as it really helped me shape my post into what people were actually interested in learning about.

One question in particular caught my eye.

It wasn’t about accessibility, but I still wanted to answer it. A few days and a little bit of writing later, and I am finally answering the question: “What are your go-to car jams?”

While I don’t recommend or encourage unnecessary travel this year, I do recognize that staying inside constantly is not an option for most people. Whehter you’re off to work, the grocery store, or one of your seemingly endless doctor appointments like me, chances are, you’ve still been spending some time behind the wheel.

Below, I have attached my 2020 Driving Playlist from Spotify. These are my current go-to songs to jam to behind the wheel. Underneath the link, I go into a bit more detail about why I have chosen the songs I have. Be sure to let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Young, Wild, And Free Jams

I’ve spent all of quarantine with my parents in my small hometown. It’s been lovely, but boy has the nostalgia been strong. I’ve been jamming to these first three songs for at least a decade (9 years for 1D) and it’s been fun to whip them out again.

*Note – if these songs are playing on my stereo, the windows are rolled all the way down and I am 100% singing along.

1. Beautiful Day – U2

U2 is one of my dad’s all time favorite bands. So, I grew up listening to their music on repeat. This song in particular reminds me of crisp fall nights when my dad would pick me up from my dance studio after rehearsal. He’d put the windows down and blast the song loud enough for people walking by outside to hear. It was, and still is, perfect.

2. Story Of My Life – One Direction

I have been a directioner for a little under a decade. I imagine I will remain a directioner for many decades into the future.

3. It’s My Life – Bon Jovi

The story behind this song is very similar to the one above about U2. It has always been and will always be fantastic.

Bring On The Drama Jams

When I have some pent up frustrations to release, I love to get on the highway, turn these songs all the way up, and just feel the emotion behind the lyrics. Whether it’s anger, sadness, or heartbreak, heavy songs are some of my favorites to drive to.

4. Drive – Miley Cyrus

So, like most girls my age, I was obsessed with Hannah Montana growing up. Unlike many fans of the show, though, I have stuck by Miley’s side through all of her phases. Yes, even the album about her dead petz. This song was released years ago now, but it has always been one of my favorites.

5. Anger – Sleeping At Last

If you are as obsessed with this show as I am, you probably know where this song comes from already. Grey’s Anatomy has defined the last two years of my life (at least my Netflix binging). The show’s soundtrack is truly iconic and most songs have the instant ability to take me back to Grey Sloan Memorial, which is obviously a very emotional space 😂

6. Dynasty – MIIA

Oh the power of heartbreak. I am so, so glad I am in a loving and committed relationship with my husband. But, it’s still fun to pretend that you’re fed up with the men in your life from time to time. This song allows me to do exactly that.

Cool As A Cucumber Jams

These songs are just fun and make me smile. I don’t have any emotional connections to them, but I love their vibe and feel-good energy.

7. Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince – Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is iconic and so is this song.

8. Kings and Queens – Ava Max

Female empowerment. Need I say more?

9. Lights Up – Harry Styles

There is nothing better than a song about finding yourself and claiming your identity 👏🏼

10. A Sweeter Place – Selena Gomez (ft Kid Cudi)

I find a sweeter place every time I hear this song.
