I am disabled and, therefore, have an automatic disadvantage in this world, BUT I still have a massive amount of privilege due to the color of my skin.

For days now, I haven’t known what to do or how to help the Black Lives Matter movement. With the fear of sticking my nose somewhere it doesn’t belong, and the anxiety of saying the wrong thing, I pretty much have chosen to share other people’s content who have much more knowledge on the subject matter than me.

Today, I wish to continue that trend, but with a fun little twist.

Below I have highlighted 11 different Instagram accounts that are run by disabled people of color. While these accounts vary in their level of activism, regular exposure to this marginalized perspective will help with general awareness and societal normalization.

Remember, no one of any minority group owes you an education; it’s time consuming, mentally and physically exhausting, and often thankless work. That said, one of the best ways to begin your educational journey into any form of social injustice is to add various voices into your daily life.

Disabled people of color are one of the most silenced groups of people on this planet and history books have managed to completely erase this identity altogether. Life saving medical care, proper education, assistive services, and other vital resources are even more difficult for disabled people of color to acquire.

So, I encourage you all to follow the amazing accounts below and pay attention as their stories unfold. DO NOT question the validity of their experiences, but instead check your own biases and work to correct them.

Without further ado…

I am Zebra strong and here are my stripes to prove it 🦓 The month of May of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) Awareness month. EDS is a genetic connective tissue disorder, which comes in different spectrums of severity. I have EDS type III, I am in constant excruciating pain, have joint dislocations, bruising, chronic fatigue plus much more, and it is the reason why I am a wheelchair user. Although, I am smiling in most of my photos, there is a lot going on behind the smile. Living with EDS takes a lot of organisation and pacing to help manage my condition. Those with the condition are referred to as zebras because, although we look like the other horses, we are genetically unique. I used to be upset and disappointed with my body for being unique, as I wanted to be like everyone else. The first 5 years of my wheelchair using journey were difficult, which resulted in me suffering with depression as I grieved for the old me. As time went on I accepted my uniqueness and new way of life and with that I became comfortable, then my confidence grew. 14 years as a wheelchair user and I can 100% say I celebrate my uniqueness. I refuse to let the pain and my condition hold me back, because I am a woman with a disability, not a disabled woman. 🦓💪🏾 . . POWER • Back when I was in psychology, I learned about power poses. Since then, there has been a lot of talk about the validity of it (honestly, even at the time) — does it *actually* have an effect on your body? Is there *actually* a change in cortisol + testosterone + all that jazz? Does it *really* increase your feelings of power? Quite frankly, I don’t really care. It makes me feel better. My psychology teacher had us all do a power pose for 2 minutes before an exam once and I got an 89%, when on the quiz, I got a 64%. Everyone else did a bit better, too. Could it have been because we understood the material more? Probably. Could it have been the power pose? MAYBE. Regardless, I like it. And on this day, the day of this particular power pose in the photo, I was feeling great — I was standing unassisted, I was dressed like a kindergarten teacher or a librarian, I was about to go to dinner with the ~future hubby~, + I was power posing for a photo because I could. Remembering that as I’m still in bed, riding out this flare that seems like my new normal. 💛 Have y’all power posed? Do you feel different? I’m convinced it’s probably a placebo but I’m down for it. 🤷🏾 . . . [ID: Devin power posing in a floral skirt, blue oversized sweater, black boots, and a beanie]
