I am disabled and, therefore, have an automatic disadvantage in this world, BUT I still have a massive amount of privilege due to the color of my skin.
For days now, I haven’t known what to do or how to help the Black Lives Matter movement. With the fear of sticking my nose somewhere it doesn’t belong, and the anxiety of saying the wrong thing, I pretty much have chosen to share other people’s content who have much more knowledge on the subject matter than me.
Today, I wish to continue that trend, but with a fun little twist.
Below I have highlighted 11 different Instagram accounts that are run by disabled people of color. While these accounts vary in their level of activism, regular exposure to this marginalized perspective will help with general awareness and societal normalization.
Remember, no one of any minority group owes you an education; it’s time consuming, mentally and physically exhausting, and often thankless work. That said, one of the best ways to begin your educational journey into any form of social injustice is to add various voices into your daily life.
Disabled people of color are one of the most silenced groups of people on this planet and history books have managed to completely erase this identity altogether. Life saving medical care, proper education, assistive services, and other vital resources are even more difficult for disabled people of color to acquire.
So, I encourage you all to follow the amazing accounts below and pay attention as their stories unfold. DO NOT question the validity of their experiences, but instead check your own biases and work to correct them.
Without further ado…
